Parent Involvement Funds

Our Parent Advisory Team has decided to spend the available funds for this year on library books and supplies. After studying the best way to use these funds to help children, the team decided on this course of action. The money was spent at the book fair as well as through online publications. We appreciate so much the time and effort the team has made on behalf of our stuents.

School Improvement Team Meeting

These are the notes taken from our last School Improvement Team meeting held at Hibbard Elementary, May 12, 2009.

Hibbard School Wide Planning Meeting
(5/12/09)
Attendance: Scott Shirley, Principal
Natalie Crowder, 1st grade
Diane Pierce, 2nd grade
Rachel Ashmore, 3rd grade
Ranae Powell, 4th Grade

A School Wide program is a comprehensive strategy designed to upgrade the educational program in a Title I school; its primary goal is to help all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced levels of accomplishment on State academic achievement standards (IRI or ISAT).

Goal: Help all students become good, solid readers; specifically students who score a 2, or low 3 on the Idaho Reading Indicator.

Items discussed:
AIMS web is a great tool for monitoring students’ performance in reading fluency.
More collaboration is needed between the teachers and the Spec. Ed. / Title One teachers.

***Is there a way that AIMS passwords can be shared to allow Spec. Ed. and teachers to see the same student results or graphing tables? Concern is that there is double duty being done here.

Strategies for accomplishing Goal:
* Have the IRI Monitor test all students in the fall, including the 4th graders.

* Encourage specific collaboration between grade level teachers and Spec. Ed / Title One.

* Have an aid and/or parent come into classrooms for a specified time to take over class while teachers and Resource have time to collaborate during school hours.

* Create teacher-to-parent training videos to help parents know: how to increase fluency, help with decoding, help with comprehension, understand Words Per Minute and how to test child, etc…

An update was given on how the parent committee is doing on the expenditure of parent involvement funding.

Proposal for Expenditures

Susan Bell submitted the following:

I spoke with Ronda Munns and got some ideas from her. We are thinking about chapter books for grades 1,2, and 3, with multiple copies. Is it OK if we just wait until the book fair and figure out the books with Suzette when she works there?
--Susan Bell

This is exactly the kind of expenditures that fit the purposes of the Title I money. I think it would be something the kids could definitely benefit from. If the rest of the committee is in agreement, we should do it.

We have developed a Parent Advisory Committee as outlined through Title I requirements. Members of the committee are Suzette Hirschi, Sheila Sommer, and Susan Bell. Their first task is to decide how to spend $270 set aside for parent involvement purposes. This could be to either enhance education in terms of materials, equipment or supplies, or perhaps helping and assisting parents with books, materials or other resources. They will be deciding in the next two weeks on where and how to spend these funds. Feel free to submit suggestions through this blog.

We appreciate your input. Tell your friends about our Parent Involvement Blog and encourage them to participate.

Sincerely,

Scott Shirley, Principal

Welcome Parents of Hibbard Elementary

We have developed this blog for the purpose of increasing parent involvement. It is a convenient way to communicate when travel and time considerations make involvement more difficult. We hope you will feel free to submit suggestions through this blog. We will preview those suggestions and post them as deemed appropriate. The latest news will always appear at the top of the page rather than at the bottom, making it more convenient to find the most current additions. Feel free to contribute to our Hibbard Parent Involvement Center blog.

Sincerely,
Scott Shirley, Principal
